Professional Statement

TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY:  Counseling is the formation of a unique, confidential, objective interpersonal relationship that is respectful, emotionally safe and fosters an environment in which to explore emotional, mental and behavioral events and concerns, both past and present.  The individual seeking counseling wants to overcome obstacles that impede leading a life that is balanced and fulfilling.

People generally strive toward a life that has meaningful relationships, fulfilling work, and personal pursuits that renew and enhance a sense of positive self-esteem and life contentment.  I believe my role of therapist is to act as a guide, using professional objectivity, knowledge of human psychology and work experience in order that clients find answers to problems using their own strengths and getting new ideas and perspectives. One of the most important ways to help clients is for each person that enters my office to feel seen and respected as a unique individual.

While therapy can have many benefits, both short and long term, it also entails dealing with painful experiences, confronting old patterns and ways in which individuals may feel stuck in their lives.  That is why therapy differs from the advice of family and friends.  That is why therapy is done with someone who has no agenda for the client, other than their well-being, and who can offer support that has clear boundaries without complicating client choices and reactions.

Therapy can include a variety of approaches other than just talking, including artwork, writing or journaling, suggested readings or activities between therapy appointments, role play, and humor.  I continue to learn about best practices and try to be innovative in my practice. Approaches vary with client needs and responses. My goal is to tailor treatment to assist exploration for each client so that the outcome is practical, somethings that people will try and use, and without making the client feel unnecessarily uncomfortable.  I want to be professional and yet approachable so that clients feel respected as a person, see that they have strengths and value as an individual, and can work to realize change in their life that makes sense to them.
